deep roots

The Lakewood Phoenix Coffeehouse has moved, expanded, and changed its name to The Root Cafe. The Root Cafe opened on Monday, unfortunately I missed the opening day festivities; but I did drop in yesterday to check out the new space and get a hit of one of my favorite beverages - a steaming cup of chai (chai, for those of you who haven't had it is a delicious, fragrant and spicy milk tea with roots in ancient India).

The Root will continue being the home for Phoenix coffee and continue offering a wide array of other beverages and fresh baked goodies, but the cafe will also contain a vegetarian kitchen which promises to offer food that is "Good for you and extraordinary in taste." Alas, yesterday I was so excited about the new space and I got so caught up in the buzz of activity, I forgot to ask about the kitchen and when it will be up and running!

The Root is staffed by a wonderful cadre of talented and friendly folks.

The new space is a delight to the eyes. I had the good fortune of talking with Joe Gallagher (at right), a master carpenter and the person who created the wonderful cityscape on the eastern wall of the cafe. The cafe was constructed with the health of our planet in mind. I learned that many of the materials used in the construction are reused or recycled; for instance the wood which Joe used for the cityscape was slated display board left behind from the business that had previously occupied the storefront.

The Root Cafe is located at 15118 Detroit Avenue - two storefronts west of its previous location.

It’s that time of year again! I’m doing the rounds and apologising for my complete failure to more regularly offer comment on everybody’s incredible efforts for the year. I know how hard it can be to keep up with the daily grind of everyday posting, and want to thank you for your efforts.

I especially want to wish festive greetings for all from down here at [nearly] the end of the world, the bottom of Tasmania.

So, if you could delete whatever is not applicable, I’d like to wish you a very pleasant/merry/happy/wonderful/safe Amaterasu; Ashurall; Beiwe; Choimus; Christmas; Dazh Boh; Dongzhi; Goru; Hanukkah; Hogmanay; Junkanoo; Karachun; Koleda; Lenæa; Meán Geimhridh; Modranicht; New Years; Ras as-Sana; Rozhanitsa Feast; Şeva Zistanê; shōgatsu; Summer Solstice [if you're in the Southern Hemisphere]; Sviatki; Vánoce; Winter solstice [if you're in the Northern Hemisphere]; Yalda; Yule-tide; Ziemassvētki; and Коляда!

With a hearty three cheers from Kris, Jen, Henry and Ezra!
