Cost conscious consumers know that one of the best ways to save money is to check out the local resale shops. Lakewood has plenty. Today we highlight the
Thrifty Peddler, a thrift shop that goes beyond just saving you money - but more on that later.
The two ladies in today's snap are Josette Oldenburg (left) and Florence Andrews. Josette has been a volunteer on the Lakewood Hospital Children's board since she herself was almost a child - she started volunteering in 1957! Florence first worked at the hospital and then around 1974 also started volunteering as part of the Women's Board.
Both ladies are long time volunteers for the Thrifty Peddler (TP)- in fact, Josette has been at the TP since the shop began in 1978; Florence started helping out about eighteen years ago. Kudos to Josette and Florence!!
The shop first began in a small room in the basement of Lakewood Hospital - since those humble beginnings the store has moved a couple times throughout the years. The Thrifty Peddler celebrates 32 years of operation. The shop is staffed solely by volunteers and all the merchandise is donated.
All the money that is raised through sales at the TP go toward special projects to help special programs and services of Lakewood Hospital. Most recently, some of the proceeds have been used toward the purchase of a van for the Child Care Center and treadmills for the Cardiac Rehab Unit. Proceeds also help fund the Employee Food Bank, the Craft Cart for patient activities and have also been used to purchase VHS/DVD players for each room in the Pediatric unit. Furthermore, the TP also provides clothing and household items directly to people in need who are referred by the Lakewood Christian Center.
The shop welcomes donations - donations can be brought in any time the shop is open - jewelry, housewares, linens, CDs, china, knickknacks and collectibles are always in demand. All items must be in good usable condition. Receipts for donations are provided.
Next time you are in downtown Lakewood pop into the Thrifty Peddler - you may be surprised what treasure you didn't know you had to have you might find! If Josette and Florence are working, tell them Hello from the Daily Snap!
The Thrifty Peddler is located on the corner of Belle and Detroit Avenue. The shop is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. and Saturday from 10 A.M to 2 P.M.
