Sunday Season Series: Hilliard bridge AUTUMN

Returning to the (very) occasional Sunday series of bridges, J. Lowe captured the Hilliard Road Bridge surrounded by full autumn glory. You may remember from the summer (click here to see) bridge snap, this bridge is considered one of the historic bridges of the United States and this beautiful open spandrel arch bridge was built in 1925.

Comparing the two snaps one can see the Rocky River is a bit higher now than it was during July.

Let's hope J. Lowe decides to continue the series and send in snaps for winter and spring - this is a truly beautiful view!

skywatch friday

Tuesday here along the north coast was a day of intense weather. Around noon the city of Lakewood's storm siren went off and all afternoon it was blowing like nobody's business. Then as evening began to fall, the blustery wind and rain moved out and the sky became very dramatic.

Above is a snap of what the sky looked like around 6:30 from my third floor window. Below what the sky looked like a half hour later.

That old expression "red at night a sailor's delight" most definitely held true, as Wednesday was a gorgeous day all around!!

To see more photos of the sky around the world visit here!

monsters - OH MY!

Tucked into a nondescript building off Hilliard Avenue is workshop like no others - for it is a MONSTER WORKSHOP!

There is little chance that many Lakewoodites probably know about this monster making shop unless they walked or driven by when the doors are open and even then it's hard to actually see any monsters. The humans that run The Monster Makers are as far from their creations as one can imagine - in fact, they are sweet, friendly, and very patient with answering my nosy Parker questions - and I might add as you can see yourself below, quite attractive!

According to their website: The Monster Makers is a mail order supply company which provides Latex Mask Making Materials, F/X Supplies, and Special Effects Instructional materials to a global market, from hobbyists to professional theatrical Special Effects artists. Our business officially began in 1990 but if you were a reader of Fangoria you may recall seeing our classified ads as early as 1986.

I forgot to ask, I expect the months and weeks leading up to this weekend are the busiest for The Monster Makers, but I could be wrong according to some sources there are monsters lurking about all the time - especially in closets and under the bed!

(By the way, through serendipity or some type of monster magic, today's post fits in with this week's Theme Thursday! to see other people who are doing the Monster Mash, go here. )

Ex-Professor? Appropriately sighted in the Lakewood Public Library parking lot.

Although, I thought being a professor was like being a marine. It is said, once a marine always a marine; wouldn't the same hold true for being a professor? Well, maybe the tag doesn't mean ex-professor - any other ideas?

Random Snap

You think a carved pumpkin is scary? Look at this tomato!

I put a slice of this on my mom's hamburger the other night and now when she sleeps, she levitates three feet off the bed and whispers in a crazy voice, "Is it wine time?"

Notice the skull in the very center? (Could be Keith Richards)

If you stare at it longer than 60 seconds, you will find yourself in the basement doing laundry.
Delete it now! Or, send it to someone you want to do your laundry!

I prayed to the lord and he said, "Make me a tomato sandwich and I will save you!"

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

dog friendly parks!

Since earlier this summer Lakewood Park is now dog friendly - YEAH! Thanks to the generosity of a few local sponsors, humans who come with their dogs don't have to panic if they forget to bring a bag as a few handy dandy doggy poop bag kiosks are to be found. But remember ALWAYS pick up after your dog!

What a delight to see a gaggle of kids walking down the street on a sunny autumn day - especially when one of the children is wearing a tutu!

It would seem that there is an abundance of personalized plates in our fair city. In fact, this one was parked in the same spot as the "Thingy" mobile!

One might wonder that this particular plate has a double meaning. I hope in either case it is not referring to a man's short coming, if you know what I mean...

Bow Wow BOO!

The weather gods were smiling on the dogs of Lakewood and their humans on Saturday for the annual Spooky Pooch parade. Hundreds of dogs registered and throngs of men, women and children came to see the pooch parade

Dogs were awarded prizes and photos of the winners will be posted at the Downtown Lakewood Blog at some date to come - check it out.

Just a few of my photos as a slideshow (if you would like the slide show to enlarge click on icon in lower right) I'm certain more photos can be seen on other community sites.

drip, drip:skywatch friday

April showers bring May flowers.

I wonder what October showers bring?

One thing for certain is they help bring down colorful leaves!

Today is Blog Action Day - the Lakewood Daily Snap didn't sign up, but my other blog mouse medicine is participating. I hope everyone who visits the Snap will pop over to the mouse. By the way, there's a bonus photo from Lakewood on the mouse (a prize will be mailed out to all Snap readers who correctly identify the shop where the first photo was taken!).

I hope the mouse inspires you to take the pledge - and stimulates you to visit some of the other 4,577 blogs (and growing) that are talking about WATER today!

On the Snap we are playing along with Skywatch Friday today - to see the sky above elsewhere in the world, go here.

wish you were here

As I was walking by Niko's On Detroit on Tuesday a poster sized photo was against the window for me to see. It isn't every day that a photo of a large smiling face is waved before you, needless to say, I had to pop in to see what was the buzz.

Turns out the photo was of Kristina Warner, now living in Arizona. Local friends "took" Kristina out for lunch at one of their favorite spots. I guess Kristina's friends wanted to make sure that Kristina didn't miss out any of the street action from their sidewalk facing table. Little did they know that a Snap snapper would be walking and would capture the moment, now Kristina can see what she was unknowingly up to .....

Kristina's friends are joined by Niko (man standing to the left), the proprietor of this popular restaurant and night spot.

15625 Detroit Ave, Lakewood, OH 44107 - Niko's opens at 11 AM for lunch, call (216) 226-7050 for exact hours.

spotlight on the Thrifty Peddler

Cost conscious consumers know that one of the best ways to save money is to check out the local resale shops. Lakewood has plenty. Today we highlight the Thrifty Peddler, a thrift shop that goes beyond just saving you money - but more on that later.

The two ladies in today's snap are Josette Oldenburg (left) and Florence Andrews. Josette has been a volunteer on the Lakewood Hospital Children's board since she herself was almost a child - she started volunteering in 1957! Florence first worked at the hospital and then around 1974 also started volunteering as part of the Women's Board.

Both ladies are long time volunteers for the Thrifty Peddler (TP)- in fact, Josette has been at the TP since the shop began in 1978; Florence started helping out about eighteen years ago. Kudos to Josette and Florence!!

The shop first began in a small room in the basement of Lakewood Hospital - since those humble beginnings the store has moved a couple times throughout the years. The Thrifty Peddler celebrates 32 years of operation. The shop is staffed solely by volunteers and all the merchandise is donated.

All the money that is raised through sales at the TP go toward special projects to help special programs and services of Lakewood Hospital. Most recently, some of the proceeds have been used toward the purchase of a van for the Child Care Center and treadmills for the Cardiac Rehab Unit. Proceeds also help fund the Employee Food Bank, the Craft Cart for patient activities and have also been used to purchase VHS/DVD players for each room in the Pediatric unit. Furthermore, the TP also provides clothing and household items directly to people in need who are referred by the Lakewood Christian Center.

The shop welcomes donations - donations can be brought in any time the shop is open - jewelry, housewares, linens, CDs, china, knickknacks and collectibles are always in demand. All items must be in good usable condition. Receipts for donations are provided.

Next time you are in downtown Lakewood pop into the Thrifty Peddler - you may be surprised what treasure you didn't know you had to have you might find! If Josette and Florence are working, tell them Hello from the Daily Snap!

The Thrifty Peddler is located on the corner of Belle and Detroit Avenue. The shop is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. and Saturday from 10 A.M to 2 P.M.

The sight of these boys walking home after school made me smile. It is nice to see something other than an electronic gadget capturing someone's attention.

I don't know about you, but I find it a pleasure to find a book that is too good to put down!

Based on the tag and stickers on "Dan's" jeep, one would could say he's a real fish out of water - or would that be a gator out of water?

coming soon

While walking along Lakewood Heights Boulevard to the Triskett RTA station I couldn't help but notice the new snazzy paint job at 13609.

When I first moved to Lakewood there was a Rego Brothers Market in that location and the building was painted the colors of the Italian flag - red, white, and green. Rego's closed in 2008. Shortly afterward a new market moved in named Carnival Fresh Farms, the building got a new paint job. But neither the market nor the Carnival color scheme didn't last very long.

I wish the new market better luck in the location. It seems like a good location for a grocery market as is an easy walk (or drive) for many Lakewoodites and Clevelanders.

The Snap will keep you posted about when it opens!

Street Art

Last week's "Busytown" featured the Streets Department of The City of Lakewood paving and tarring cracks in preparation for the onset of winter.

From a street view, this is no big thing, but from above, an abstract vision appears!

Could it be a panther? Or a jaguar, climbing, looking for it's prey? Or, just a blob of tar. It only appears when the sun is in a certain position reflecting it against the asphalt.
