happy flag day

Happy Flag Day!

An antique flag (if you look closely and count you will find there are only 48 stars)  graces a stately home on Arthur Avenue.

This morning as I got ready to post this photo for Flag Day  I  started wondering about the origin of Flag Day.  Thanks to google my curiosity was quickly satisfied.  Let me summarize what I learned for the other curious cats out there.  The holiday roots go back to June 14, 1777 when the stars and stripes officially became the flag of the United States.  Various states started celebrating the Flag Resolution of 1777 as early as 1885,  Flag Day was officially established by Woodrow Wilson in 1916, however it it wasn't until August 3, 1949  when President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress that finally designated June 14th as Flag Day.  More proof that it takes a loooong time to get things done in Washington.
