This weekend a segment of Lakewood lost power. We went out to investigate how large the outage was (fairly large) - one thing I noticed while walking down Madison Avenue was how clueless many drivers are regarding the proper thing to do when a traffic light is out of commission. It appeared that over 50% of the drivers blew through the intersection with nary a thought. This is not only the wrong thing to do but can be extremely dangerous!! Although we didn't witness any collisions we did see a couple close calls.
When a traffic signal is not working the proper thing to do is to treat the intersection as a all-way stop! Sometimes the city will place stop signs at the intersection - but this is rare and often only done at the busiest of intersections.
One silver lining of power outages is that it does foster a sense of community and it is one way to get people out of the house and have people meet new folks! With everyone's television sets dark, watching the utility company can be the best show in town!
